When the male sperm and female egg are formed, each sperm has 23 chromosomes, i.e. including 22 autosomes and 1 sex chromosome, exactly half of the chromosomes contained in a human cell. Since the female sex chromosome is XX, females have only one type of egg, the egg cell containing one X chromosome. In contrast, the male sex chromosome is XY, so there are two types of male sperm, one containing an X chromosome and the other containing a Y chromosome. When the sperm containing the X chromosome combines with the egg, it forms an XX congress, which eventually develops into a female fetus; when the sperm containing the Y chromosome combines with the egg, it forms an XY congress, which eventually develops into a male fetus. At egg fertilization, the combination of the two types of sperm and egg is completely random, and this determines whether the next generation will have a 50% chance of being male or female.

In studies of growth cells, scientists have found that sperm with X chromosomes and sperm with Y chromosomes have different characteristics: sperm with X chromosomes are less mobile and move more slowly, but live longer, while sperm with Y chromosomes are more mobile and swim faster, but live shorter. It was also found that sperm with X chromosomes prefer an acidic environment, while sperm with Y chromosomes prefer an alkaline environment.
